The €49 DeutschlandTicket has been a revolutionary offering for public transport users in Germany since its launch in May 2023. We were all jumping for joy, remember?
It was designed as an affordable solution for unlimited regional travel, the ticket has allowed both locals and travelers to explore Germany with ease, and affordably. However, with the upcoming price increase to €58 in 2025, many of you have been writing me asking me if it’s really still worth it, especially for casual users. Let’s dive into the details, pros and cons, and explore alternatives to help you decide if this ticket is still right for you.
Is the DeutschlandTicket still worth it?
For daily commuters, the €49 DeutschlandTicket (soon to be €58) still remains a bargain. Compared to traditional monthly transport passes in most cities, it still offers significant savings. For example:
- A monthly pass for local public transport in Munich typically costs upwards of €70 or more.
- In Frankfurt, commuters often pay around €100 – €200 for a comparable ticket.
For these users, the DeutschlandTicket is still an obvious choice! More travel at a fraction of the cost. Even for those who choose to book a youth ticket or a ticket that’s valid from 9 AM and onwards, the DeutschlandTicket is still worth its value.
The Downsides of the DeutschlandTicket
While the ticket has its perks, the recent price increase has caused many of you to reevaluate your monthly subscription! Here’s what you may want to know:
- Monthly Subscription Model: The Deutschlandticket operates as a subscription (“Abo”), which requires cancellation by the 10th of the month to avoid being charged for the following month. This system has caught many tourists and locals (including myself and my mom) off guard, leading to unintended charges.
- Regional Limitations: While it covers an impressive range of regional transport options, it is not valid for long-distance trains like ICE, IC, or EC services. For travelers needing faster connections, this can be frustrating. While the deal seems sweet, the practicality of getting from Düsseldorf to Frankfurt in 1-hour on the ICE train is quite amazing.
- Value for Casual Travelers: For those who only use public transport sporadically or during specific weekends, the new price might outweigh the benefits, especially when compared to pay-as-you-go options or group tickets. I personally purchase a “10-er ticket” in Düsseldorf which gives me a discount off each individual ticket if I buy 10 of them at once.
Alternatives to the Deutschlandticket
If the increased price or subscription model of the Deutschlandticket doesn’t work for you, here are some alternatives worth considering:
Omio for Flexible Travel
You probably don’t need a run-through on what Omio offers, but for those of you who have been hiding under a log, Omio is a travel booking platform that simplifies the process of finding and comparing transport options. Easily put – they’re here to find you the cheapest and fastest route to your final destination (whether by plane, train, bus, or ferry). Here’s why I think Omio is a must-have app for traveling around Germany:
- Real-Time Updates: Get live updates on delays, cancellations, and platform changes.
- Affordable Deals: Omio often features discounts on regional and long-distance travel, which can be cheaper than the DeutschlandTicket for occasional users.
- User-Friendly Interface: The app is intuitive and in ENGLISH making it easy to book tickets on the go. My cousin who often backpacks around Europe swears by Omio for his last-minute travel discounts.
Basically, Omio ensures you’re not overpaying for convenience!
Regional Day Tickets
For one-off trips, many regions in Germany offer day tickets (“Ländertickets”) that are valid for unlimited travel within a specific state. For instance:
- The Bayern-Ticket allows unlimited travel across Bavaria for as little as €29 (plus €10 per additional person).
- The Quer-durchs-Land-Ticket provides affordable travel and day rates for groups.
