10 Reasons Why You Will Never Leave Germany Once You Get Here

by | Cultural Immersion

I’ve been living in Germany as an international for many years now, and although many expats love to complain about things they hate in Germany, there are a few reasons we never really will leave! Below are 10 reasons why you will NEVER leave Germany once you’ve arrived.

Why You Will Never Leave Germany

🍺 The Beer

One of the main reasons why I would never want to leave Germany is the beer. It might sound stereotypical, but the difference in taste is undeniable. I do not drink beer when I go back to Canada because now it tastes so bad to me. German beer, whether it is a basic Helles, Pilsner, or Hager, offers a unique and delightful flavor that I struggle to find elsewhere. Even compared to craft beer, the German beer brand’s variety and distinct tastes are unmatched. Enjoying a delicious beer in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin and going to Oktoberfest were memorable experiences, and it’s just one of the many reasons why you will never leave Germany.

🛒 The Affordable Groceries

Another compelling reason I find it hard to consider leaving Germany is the affordability of groceries. While restaurant prices are reasonable, the real surprise comes when you visit the grocery store. Basic essentials like cheese, milk, flour, and eggs are incredibly cheap, making it possible to live well and eat healthily without breaking the bank. This stark contrast to the expensive grocery prices in some other countries, like Greece or my home country of Canada, makes Germany ideal for a comfortable and budget-friendly lifestyle. The affordable groceries here truly make a significant difference in everyday life, reinforcing why you will never leave Germany.

☕ The Cafe Culture

One of Germany’s charming aspects that adds to the reasons why you will never leave Germany is the cafe culture. Enjoying coffee and cake is a delightful tradition, particularly on lazy Sunday afternoons. Even as a tea drinker, I’ve come to appreciate the relaxing ritual of savoring tea alongside delectable German cakes, which are less sweet but incredibly delicious. The experience of indulging in these delightful treats creates a sense of comfort and contentment, which is one of my favorite parts of life in Germany.

🥨 The Delicious Bread

When it comes to baked goods, German bread is a standout feature that contributes to why you will never want to leave. Initially, the variety of sweet breads might seem unusual, but the moment you savor the crisp exterior and soft, flavorful interior of a traditional German bread, it’s a game-changer. The texture and taste of German bread are unparalleled, and once you become accustomed to it, there’s simply no turning back. The sheer delight of enjoying freshly baked German bread will make you appreciate the unique culinary experience that Germany offers.

🇩🇪 The Appreciation for Learning German

Learning the German language was quite challenging for me, but once I mastered it, the appreciation and encouragement I received from native Germans were incredibly rewarding. When I speak English with Germans, they often express kindness and appreciation for my efforts, and they are willing to switch to German to make communication easier. Their positive and supportive attitude towards language learners creates a sense of belonging and motivates me to continue learning. I recommend learning German with Lingoda. The Lingoda Language Sprints, such as the Super Sprint and Sprint, offer an intensive yet enjoyable learning experience. The feeling of pride and accomplishment when speaking in German adds to the reasons why I would never want to leave Germany.

🚇The Excellent Transportation System

Transportation in Germany is fantastic, especially coming from North America. I’ve lived here for many years, and don’t need a car. Getting from point A to B is usually much easier on public transport than in a car. In major cities like Berlin, trams come every three minutes, allowing you to reach anywhere faster than by car. The efficient and reliable public transportation system in Germany is one of the reasons why I never want to leave.

💰The Affordable and Accessible Education System

The education system in Germany is not only affordable but also accessible. Germans study for a long time because their free education system allows them to pursue higher education for an extended period. While they may pay fees for books and a standard semester fee, which might include a transit pass, the overall education system is very affordable. As a parent, I want my children to have the opportunity to learn in Germany for free, as I understand the challenges of paying off university expenses. The accessibility and affordability of the education system in Germany, including university, make it a place where you can dream big, and this is one of the reasons why I never want to leave.

🏥The Fantastic Healthcare System

Germany boasts an exceptional healthcare system that stands out among many other countries. In comparison to my experiences in hospitals in India and Thailand, the healthcare system in Germany is truly remarkable. The quality of healthcare here is top-notch, and it’s no wonder that it’s considered one of the best in the world. Despite one unfortunate experience, overall, the insurance and healthcare system in Germany is fantastic and provides a sense of security and comfort, especially when I gave birth; that reinforces, why I would not want to leave.

✈️ The Endless Travel Opportunities

The travel opportunities in Germany are boundless, making it easy to stay busy and explore numerous beautiful destinations. Whether visiting stunning cities like Hamburg or Berlin, exploring captivating castles, kayaking on scenic rivers, or venturing out to the Alps, the diversity of landscapes and experiences is truly remarkable. From taking the FlixBus to camper bus trips, the ease of traveling and the myriad of places to explore make it difficult to ever run out of new and exciting adventures. The vast and varied landscape of Germany offers an abundance of travel opportunities that contribute to why you will never leave Germany.
