10 Awesome German Baby Products You’ll Wish You Had!

by | Cultural Immersion

As a Canadian living in Germany, I’ve discovered some incredible German baby products worth sharing with the world. From the genius Mutterpass to the practical leather crawling shoes, these German baby items are sure to inspire you and make you wish you had them when raising your little ones.

German Baby Products ⬇️

Mutterpass (Mother’s Passport)

The Mutterpass is an absolute genius creation that every pregnant woman should have. It’s like a passport for expectant mothers, documenting essential information such as blood tests, glucose levels, baby’s size, hospital visits, and every pregnancy appointment. This comprehensive book is required during childbirth and is crucial to have on hand in case of emergencies, especially if you’re far from home. In Germany, midwives at hospitals rely on this document to provide proper care, making it an indispensable asset for expectant mothers.

Leder Krabbel Schuhe (Leather Crawling Shoes)

Leder Krabbel Schuhe, or leather crawling shoes, are a must-have for babies learning to crawl and pull themselves up. Unlike regular slippers, these handmade leather shoes are durable, breathable, and provide excellent grip, making them perfect for both winter and summer. They are a practical and long-lasting solution to keep your baby’s feet clean and protected while they explore and develop motor skills. These shoes are highly popular in Germany for their quality and functionality, making them a favorite among parents.

3. Wattepad (Cotton Pads)

One thing that stood out to me was the use of Wattepad, or cotton pads, by German parents. These disposable cotton pads are commonly used instead of wet wipes during the first few months of the baby’s life. They are used with warm water and are favored for being gentler and warmer on the baby’s skin, especially during colder months. Additionally, they are found to be more effective in removing meconium, a sticky substance produced by newborns, compared to wet wipes. This approach reflects the emphasis on natural and gentle care for babies, and it’s a practice that many parents find beneficial.

4. Weleda Calendula Cream

Weleda, a popular German skincare brand, particularly stood out to me for its Calendula Cream. This natural product, widely used by both German and international communities, is highly regarded for its versatility. It’s commonly utilized as a bum rash cream and skin moisturizer, especially for babies with dry skin. The fact that it’s a natural product made in Germany adds to its appeal, and many parents find it to be effective and gentle on their baby’s skin. The widespread appreciation for this product indicates its reliability and suitability for the needs of babies.

5. Steiff Stuffed Animals

Steiff stuffed animals are a beloved German tradition and a popular gift for newborn babies – the bunnies and the bears are my favorite. These high-quality, German-made stuffed animals are often given as the first present to a newborn. They are cherished for their exceptional quality and are sometimes even passed down as cherished keepsakes. These stuffed animals come in various sizes, from tiny baby sizes to larger ones, making them a versatile and timeless gift for young children. Many families in Germany have a special attachment to these stuffed animals, and they are often treasured as a child’s favorite cuddly toy.

6. German Sleep Sacks (Schlafsäcke)

In Germany, sleep sacks, known as “Schlafsäcke,” are highly valued for their practicality and quality. German sleep sacks are available in a variety of thicknesses to suit different seasons, ensuring that babies are comfortably and safely dressed for sleep. Additionally, there are accompanying long-sleeve undergarments designed to be worn with the sleep sacks, providing further flexibility and warmth. While these sleep sacks may be more expensive, they are considered an essential investment by many German parents. Moreover, the option to purchase second-hand sleep sacks at kid flea markets offers a cost-effective solution for parents. Within the parenting community, German sleep sacks are highly regarded and appreciated, often being mentioned as a top item that parents value for their babies.

7. German Splash Pants (Matschhose)

German parents go above and beyond in preparing their kids for winter, whether on a weekend getaway or just at the park. One essential item in their winter wardrobe is the Matschhose, also known as splash pants. These are a must-have for every child, required at daycare, school, and any outdoor activities during cold weather. They come in various options, including fleece-lined ones, and are highly favored by both German and international parents for keeping kids warm and clean while they play. The practicality and functionality of these splash pants make them a beloved item in the arsenal of German baby products.

8. Thermomix

One of the quintessentially German items that stand out is the Thermomix (or a similar do-it-all food processor like the WMF Avantgarde). This all-in-one cooking device is a favorite among German moms and dads, offering a range of functionalities from cooking and chopping to blending. While it comes with a hefty price tag, typically costing a couple of thousand euros, it’s a popular choice for making baby food and versatile enough for preparing various dishes. While it may not fit everyone’s budget, the Thermomix is highly regarded for its convenience and efficiency in the kitchen, making it a sought-after appliance among German parents.

9. German Wooden Toys

Wooden toys are a popular choice for children in Germany, and they are easily accessible without breaking the bank. Stores like IKEA, ALDI, and LIDL offer a wide range of high-quality wooden toys at affordable prices. Additionally, German brands like HABA are renowned for producing exceptional wooden toys. The durability of wooden toys makes them a practical investment, allowing families to pass them down to younger siblings or future generations. This emphasis on durability and sustainability aligns with the Montessori approach, making wooden toys one of the highly popular German baby products.

10. Merino Wool Suits

In Germany, babies are often seen wearing all-weather suits made from merino wool throughout the year. These suits are not only practical but also eco-friendly and sustainable. While they may come with a higher price tag, their durability and versatility make them a worthwhile investment. The natural properties of merino wool, such as breathability and temperature regulation, ensure that babies stay comfortable in various weather conditions. Despite the initial cost, the long-term benefits of merino wool suits make them a preferred choice among German baby products.

Bonus: BabyBay Bedside Sleeper

If you’re looking for a practical and versatile sleeping solution for your baby, the BabyBay bedside sleeper is a game-changer. This German-designed bed is ingeniously crafted to be placed next to your bed, allowing your baby to sleep comfortably while still being close to you. What makes it even more impressive is its functionality as a kid’s bench once your baby outgrows it as a sleeper. The BabyBay is renowned for its durability and practicality, making it one of my favorite German baby products.

Bonus: German Baby Food

When it comes to baby food, Germany offers a wide array of options that are not only nutritious but also convenient and affordable. Unlike some other countries, German baby food jars are filled with a variety of healthy, organic options, providing a more balanced and diverse diet for your little one. These baby food jars are readily available, making it easy for parents to ensure their babies are getting the nutrition they need. Many parents find the quality and diversity of German baby food to be superior, often choosing to stock up on these products when visiting or returning to their home countries.

Bonus: German Corn Sticks (Maisstangen)

One of the other German baby products that international moms typically fall in love with in Germany is the German Maisstangen or Hirse Stangen. These are easy-to-hold, chewable sticks that babies adore. The most popular brand in Düsseldorf features a tiger on its packaging and is highly favored among parents for its quality and appeal to babies. These German corn sticks are a hit among international parents for their practicality and ability to keep babies entertained and content.
