7 Ways Germany Changed My Life 🌍

by | Learning German

Living in Germany for a decade has been a transformative journey. From personal growth to lifestyle changes, the experience has reshaped my values and perspectives. Here are seven significant ways Germany has changed my life for the better.

7 Ways Germany Changed My Life 🌍

1. I Dress Better 👗

One of the first noticeable changes in my life is my sense of style. Germans take pride in their appearance, and this culture has influenced me tremendously. Back in Canada, I often opted for comfort over style, especially when working from home.

Now, I wake up, get dressed, and start my day feeling fresh. This simple habit has boosted my confidence and improved my overall mood. Dressing well has become a form of self-care, making me feel good inside and out.

2. I Care More About the Environment 🌱

Germany has instilled a deep respect for the environment in me. The focus on sustainability and eco-friendly practices is palpable. I’ve become a recycling pro, often feeling the gaze of elderly Germans ensuring I’m doing it right.

Additionally, public transport in Germany is exceptional, encouraging me to rely less on cars. The availability of fresh, affordable produce has also prompted me to adopt healthier eating habits. I’m proud to say that I actively participate in reducing my carbon footprint.

3. I’ve Embraced Plant-Based Living 🌾

As part of my commitment to the environment, I’ve transitioned to a more plant-based lifestyle. The recent initiative by German grocery stores to equalize the prices of vegan and meat products is a game-changer. It’s now easier and more affordable to make environmentally conscious choices.

To facilitate this change, I invested in a Milky Plant machine. This revolutionary device allows me to make my own plant milk at home in under three minutes. It’s a sustainable choice that reduces waste and saves money!

4. I’m Picky About Friendships 🤝

Living in Germany has changed my approach to friendships. I’ve learned to be selective about who I invest my time in. This pickiness has led to deeper, more meaningful connections with those who share similar values and interests.

Creating lasting friendships has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my journey. I cherish the bonds I’ve formed here and appreciate the quality over quantity approach to relationships.

5. I Value My Health More 🏋️‍♀️

Health consciousness has become a priority for me, largely due to the German lifestyle. The culture promotes active living, and I find myself cycling more often, even when I have access to a car. The joy of being outdoors and enjoying nature has enhanced my physical and mental well-being.

Moreover, I’ve adopted healthier eating habits and prioritize self-care, recognizing its importance for a balanced lifestyle. This shift has made me more aware of my body and its needs.

6. I’ve Learned Efficiency in Work 💼

As a freelancer, I’ve discovered the value of efficiency, a trait I attribute to my time in Germany. Business communications are straightforward and to the point, eliminating unnecessary fluff. This approach has helped me stay focused and productive.

Learning to balance work and personal life has been another significant change. I’ve embraced the concept of “work-life balance,” turning off my phone at the end of the day to spend quality time with my family. This has enriched my daily life and allowed me to enjoy the little moments.

7. I’ve Grown Culturally and Linguistically 📚

Perhaps the most profound change has been my cultural and linguistic growth. Living in Germany has opened my eyes to diverse cultures, languages, and histories. I’ve gained a greater appreciation for the world around me.

Learning German has been a challenging yet rewarding experience, allowing me to communicate and connect with others on a deeper level. I now consider myself bilingual, which is something I never imagined as a Canadian.

In conclusion, the past ten years in Germany have been a journey of self-discovery and growth. Each of these seven ways Germany has changed my life reflects a commitment to becoming a better person and global citizen. Here’s to another decade of learning and evolving in this beautiful country!
