I’m Happier in Germany Than Canada: A Personal Journey ❤️

by | Cultural Immersion

I’m happier in Germany than Canada because it has offered me a more fulfilling and enriching life. I dive into my journey of transitioning from Canada to Germany, discussing the experiences, challenges, and joys that have shaped my life here.

I’m Happier in Germany Than Canada: A Personal Journey ❤️

Finding a Home: The Apartment Hunt

When I first moved to Germany, I faced the challenge of finding a suitable apartment. The process can be daunting, even for Germans. My husband, being a native, helped navigate the complexities. It took us several months, living with my mother-in-law for eight months, before we finally found our home.

Initially, we searched through various platforms, but we ended up finding our apartment through a small newspaper ad. It was a modest listing, but we felt fortunate to find a place that fit our needs. If you’re looking for temporary housing as you settle in, I recommend checking out Wunderflats. They offer furnished apartments that allow you to register in your city, providing a great starting point in your new life.

Cost of Living: What to Expect

The cost of living varies significantly throughout Germany. When we first moved to Düsseldorf, we paid around €675 for a 76 square meter flat. Nowadays, prices have surged, with average rent hovering between €12 to €13 per square meter. Understanding the difference between cold rent (Kaltmiete) and warm rent (Warmmiete) is crucial. Cold rent refers to the base rent, while warm rent includes additional expenses like water and heating.

Living in a larger city will typically cost more, but there are ways to manage expenses. For example, you can explore smaller towns for more affordable housing options. If you’re interested in investing in property, I have numerous tips to share based on my experiences.

Embracing the Culture: Integration and Language Learning

Integrating into German society has been a rewarding yet challenging experience. Learning the language is vital for effective communication and understanding the culture. I encourage anyone planning to move to Germany to start learning German before arriving. Courses from platforms like Lingoda, SmarterGerman, or Rocket Languages can be incredibly beneficial.

Initially, I struggled with the language barrier, but I gradually learned through immersion with my husband’s family. This experience, while intense, allowed me to adapt quickly. Now, I am proud of my language skills, as they have opened many doors for me socially and professionally.

Family Life: Support and Benefits ‍‍‍

As a mother of two, I have found Germany to be a supportive environment for families. The government provides numerous benefits for parents, from financial support during pregnancy to educational assistance for children. The parental leave system is generous, allowing for quality time with family.

Moreover, the flexibility of German employers is commendable. Many understand the challenges of balancing work and family life, offering support when needed. This supportive atmosphere has contributed significantly to my happiness in Germany.

Exploring My Surroundings: Nature and Activities

Germany is rich in history and culture, offering a plethora of outdoor activities. I have discovered beautiful hiking trails and vibrant flea markets that align with my interests. While Düsseldorf is known for its art and fashion, I have found ways to enjoy nature and explore local culture.

Creating a fulfilling life in Germany has required some effort, but I have embraced the process. The opportunities for personal growth and cultural experiences are abundant, making each day an adventure.

Challenges Faced: Adapting to a New Life

Despite the many positives, adapting to life in Germany has not been without challenges. The bureaucratic processes can be overwhelming, and navigating them requires patience and organization. I have dedicated the last ten years to understanding these systems and sharing my insights with others.

It’s essential to acknowledge that the transition may not be smooth for everyone, but perseverance is key. The rewards of living in Germany far outweigh the initial struggles, leading to a fulfilling life that I cherish.

Reflecting on My Journey: The Happiness Factor

Looking back, I can confidently say that my life in Germany has been more fulfilling than my previous life in Canada. The richness of culture, opportunities for personal growth, and supportive community have all contributed to my happiness. I have built a life that I am proud of, and I owe much of it to the experiences I have gained in Germany.

As I continue to navigate this journey, I remain grateful for the love and support of my family and friends. I encourage anyone considering a move to Germany to embrace the adventure and discover the happiness that awaits.

Conclusion: Why Germany Brings More Happiness Than Canada

In conclusion, my experience living in Germany has undeniably brought me more happiness than I ever found in Canada. The combination of a supportive family structure, a rich cultural landscape, and numerous opportunities for personal and professional growth makes Germany a remarkable place to call home. If you’re contemplating a move, I wholeheartedly recommend taking the plunge. You may find that Germany brings you the happiness you’ve been seeking.
